CompassionSC is a collaborative community serving those facing poverty. It mobilizes individuals and churches who desire to a compelling force of compassionate love in action and enduring hope. Although CompassionSC was formally started on July 1st of 2008, over the last year a number of churches and individuals have dreamed how to live out the vision of CompassionSC. So, in one sense the work of CompassionSC has been going on for some time in the hearts of people in SC and in the church for years.
High St. Community Church and Faith Community Church have supported CompassionSC from the beginning. Starting in 2007, these two churches, along with others, have united their efforts and shared their resources to serve the poor and disadvantaged. Other churches, organizations, and individuals are coming forward to join the network and we are excited about these future partnerships. The first year CompassionSC was housed under High St. Community Church and utilized office space on their campus too. CompassionSC is in the process of moving under the umbrella of another non profit and is currently working out of and is a member of NextSpace downtown.
CompassionSC was founded and is directed by Derek Dominguez. Derek was previously on staff full time at High St. Community Church as the pastor to college students and young adults from the Fall of 2003 until June of 2008. He has experience in full time ministry in the church, teaching in the public schools, coaching and social media. He is passionate about the church and individuals coming alongside of those facing poverty and making a tangible difference in their lives. He has his BA in philosophy and a minor in English from Cal Poly, SLO. He also has a Master's degree in theology. Currently he is in the application process to enter a program for his Master's in Family and Marriage Therapy.
